About Me

My name is Carrie Ann Cleveland. I am originally from Santa Cruz, CA but have lived in Maine, Hawaii and Alaska, however, I’ve spent most of my adulthood in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of San Francisco, graduating magna cum laude in just two years, while still working full time.

I also have two master’s degrees from Pepperdine University, graduating summa cum laude with each. I am a licensed marriage and family therapist
in California and Washington, as well as a licensed professional clinical counselor nationwide. Furthermore, I am a certified high conflict divorced coach.

I got my start as a therapist as a grief counselor at a non-profit supporting the surviving family members of organ donors.

Since then I’ve worked in a variety of settings including a low-income clinic, several prestigious treatment centers, in several group practices and in my own private practice.

Why I became a therapist:

I am a trauma therapist, and like most people in the field of mental health, I came to this profession the hard way - by experiencing my own traumas and working through them.  While I feel that I was a born therapist, this career was solidified for me through my own experience of trauma and recovery.

I am passionate about therapy as a means of healing trauma, generating resilience and contributing to the development of collective wellness for the larger community.

My approach to therapy:

I value therapy as a space that welcomes all parts of you and your history, including those identities or aspects of life that may be judged, discriminated against, taboo, or hard to speak of elsewhere.

Perhaps you are wondering if the impact of pain, trauma or loss will always affect you, or maybe you are seeking therapy looking for relief from struggles with anxiety, depression, PTSD, or
maybe other mental health challenges.

You may be seeking to shift long-standing patterns of thought, behavior or relationship dynamics that prevent you from building the life and relationships that you long for.

Others who choose to see me want to be comfortable being their most authentic self, usually by developing a closer relationship with their deepest emotions and beliefs and learning to embrace their uniqueness.

Throughout my experiences and training I’ve maintained a central focus on the experiences of trauma, especially within the domain of narcissistic abuse, high conflict divorce and custody disputes, coercive control, and post-separation abuse, as well as those struggling with the behaviors of borderline personality disorder.

I specialize in therapy for those impacted by interpersonal trauma and adverse childhood experiences.  I have worked with individuals from all walks of life to navigate the full range of experiences encountered on life’s journey.  From billionaires to the disenfranchised, no matter the individual, one of the most common beliefs I hear is some version of feeling unworthy, unlovable, unforgivable and not good enough.

Therapy is for those looking to heal trauma, build authentic and meaningful relationships, and create the lives they want to live.  By working collaboratively to deepen your self-understanding and implement positive change through exploration of a wide range of aspects of yourself and your life, this can be achieved.

This can include talking about thoughts, feelings, dreams and experiences that you may not be able to express elsewhere.

Therapy can seem scary or daunting at first, but as Glennon Doyle says, “We can do hard things”, and I find that no matter the topic, there is usually lots of laughter through the tears in all my sessions.

What I like to do for fun:

I enjoy hot yoga, boxing, a good Netflix binge with copious amounts of Thai or Indian food, dropping water balloons off tall buildings, and having food fights with my daughter in the backyard.

Quotes I find inspiring:

“If you don’t heal what hurt you, you will bleed all over those who didn’t cut you" ~ Unknown.
